EDF’s setbacks amount to 26 billion


The possibility of a nationalization of nuclear activity after the presidential election is resurfacing.

We are only in March, but the more EDF advances in the year, the more its situation worsens. The electrician already knows that his results for this year will be catastrophic. On Monday, he revised upwards, from 18 to 26 billion euros, the cost of his misfortunes. These consist of a deep deficit in nuclear production linked to a series default, and the government measure to freeze electricity prices for businesses and households. An estimation “purely mechanical” from the new EDF figures results in a negative Ebitda (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) of -2.2 billion euros in 2022, calculate Barclays analysts.

The biggest defeat is due to the nuclear production deficit. The discovery of unexpected corrosion phenomena on nuclear reactors forces the electrician to drastically extend certain shutdowns for maintenance. This will result in a production shortfall of 30 terawatt hours (30,000 megawatt hours) this year…
