Education: “There are situations where parents fail,” judges Aurore Bergé

“There will be no religious war at school.” Traveling Thursday to Viry-Châtillon in Essonne, the Prime Minister presented his measures to deal with the rise in violence among young people, regularly with an “identity or religious subtext”, he judges. . This commune in Île-de-France was the scene of the violent attack on Shemseddine, a 15-year-old young man, beaten to death by the brothers of a girl with whom he was chatting. An honor killing which marks the peak of violence between adolescents in recent months.

Single mothers who “have to manage everything”

The Prime Minister insists that “a burst of authority” takes place, at school, but also at home. “Yes, there are situations where parents are clearly failing, where there is no longer a framework, where there is no more authority”, judge at the microphone of Europe 1, Aurore Bergé.

The government now wants compensation for damage not only to be the responsibility of the parent looking after the child. A way to empower fathers and protect single mothers, too often singled out when they need help, continues the minister. “We have become accustomed to considering that it is normal for mothers to be all alone and that they are the only ones on the front line having to manage everything,” she is indignant.

Make both parents responsible

“Single-parent families, we must be clear, it is very rarely a situation chosen by the woman. It is a situation that she endures. So what does that mean? It means that we find ourselves with single women who must stand up, who must stand up on all fronts”, highlighting in particular the over-representation of minors from single-parent families during the riots in the summer of 2023.

“Saying that is not pointing the finger at these single-parent families, it is just describing the situation as it is. So we are going to seek the responsibility of both parents. I do not want us to accept a situation where we say to ourselves, after all, the women have been left alone and society will accept it. We must not leave these women alone. This is the question of boarding schools to also support these children. is the specific support that we must have for single-parent families But it also means setting a clear framework, ultimately quite basic, which is to say that we can leave each other in a couple but that we do not leave our loved ones. children.”, she concludes.
