- If Swiss cantons worked more efficiently, they could save CHF 12.9 billion annually.
- This is the conclusion of a study by the University of Lausanne and the company PWC, which is based on data from 2020.
- However, since some factors can hardly be influenced, according to the authors, this billion-dollar potential will never be fully exploited.
According to the study, the greatest savings potential – namely CHF 4.6 billion – lies in the education system. There, the cantons achieve an average efficiency of 81 percent.
In the social sector, the savings potential across cantons is around 2.9 billion francs. There, urban cantons with a high population density, higher living costs and a high proportion of foreigners are in the lower ranks.
Security area: Latin cantons in front
In terms of efficient work, the area of public order and safety averages 73 percent – although the values vary widely. Over the past ten years, Ticino and Vaud were the most efficient cantons in this area.
In the road sector, there is another CHF 2.3 billion, and there is also great potential in the cultural sector with CHF 1.1 billion.
The authors of the study from the University of Lausanne and PWC write that the entire improvement potential of CHF 12.9 billion can hardly be fully exploited due to various topographical and socio-demographic contextual factors.
