  • If Swiss cantons worked more efficiently, they could save CHF 12.9 billion annually.
  • This is the conclusion of a study by the University of Lausanne and the company PWC, which is based on data from 2020.
  • However, since some factors can hardly be influenced, according to the authors, this billion-dollar potential will never be fully exploited.

According to the study, the greatest savings potential – namely CHF 4.6 billion – lies in the education system. There, the cantons achieve an average efficiency of 81 percent.

In the social sector, the savings potential across cantons is around 2.9 billion francs. There, urban cantons with a high population density, higher living costs and a high proportion of foreigners are in the lower ranks.

In the road sector, there is another CHF 2.3 billion, and there is also great potential in the cultural sector with CHF 1.1 billion.

The authors of the study from the University of Lausanne and PWC write that the entire improvement potential of CHF 12.9 billion can hardly be fully exploited due to various topographical and socio-demographic contextual factors.
