CAIRO (Reuters) – A sister of Alaa Abd el-Fattah, Sanaa Seif, announced that the Egyptian opponent had called off his hunger strike, via a letter from the imprisoned blogger posted on Twitter on Tuesday.
“I stopped my strike. I will explain everything on Thursday,” reads this letter dated Monday.
“The most important thing is that I want to celebrate my birthday with you on Thursday (…) so bring a cake and provisions”, is it also noted.
Alaa Abd el-Fattah, a leading activist and blogger, was sentenced in December 2021 to five years in prison for spreading false news.
He went on a hunger strike on April 2 to protest his imprisonment and conditions of detention.
Along with the arrival of many personalities in Egypt for the COP 27 climate conference, in Sharm el-Sheikh he announced on Sunday November 6 that he would also stop hydrating and several leaders – including US President Joe Biden – discussed his situation with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi.
His family said on Monday that he had sent a message to say he drank the water again on November 12.
