EHF EURO Cup – Hungary clearly too strong for Switzerland – Sport

  • The Swiss lost 26:38 to the hosts at the EHF Euro Cup in Hungary.
  • The best goalscorer in Switzerland is Tabea Schmid with 6 goals.
  • In addition to Switzerland and Hungary, Norway and Austria are also taking part in the European Championship preparation tournament.

The Swiss were only able to keep the game in Tatabanya level until it was 3-3. The favored Hungarians then pulled away. At the break they were still narrowly leading at 16:14, although the national team was able to keep the deficit within limits thanks to a few strong minutes before the break.

After the break, the Swiss definitely couldn’t keep up. So in the end the verdict was clear: the game went to Hungary 38:26. On the Swiss side, Tabea Schmid (6 goals), Kerstin Küng (5) and Malin Altherr (5) were particularly convincing. Era Baumann, just 16 years old, was also able to experience a personal sense of achievement when she scored her first national team goal.

Knut Ove Joa’s team had two keepers in goal: Manuela Brütsch and Sladana Dokovic. The regular goalkeeper Lea Schüpbach is currently out with a torn cruciate ligament.

Preparatory tournament for the European Championships

The EHF Euro Cup is contested as preparation for the European Handball Championship. Because the Swiss, as well as the Hungarians and the Austrians are the hosts and the Norwegians are the defending champions for the tournament, serious fights are simulated between the four teams.

After a win (against Austria) and a defeat (against Norway) in October, Switzerland was left as a loser for the second time. Norway and Austria will also duel on Tuesday evening.

This is how it goes

On Saturday it’s against Hungary again, then in Gümlingen. You can watch the game live on SRF from 4:30 p.m.
