Ehpad scandal: “The health magazine” looks at the solutions

The Ehpad scandal revealed by Victor Castanet in his book The gravediggers
continues to propagate its shock wave. And among the many programs that take up this problem of the dependency of our elders, The health magazine from France 5 is available as a special. It broadcasts a number on Tuesday entitled “Ehpad, and now?”. “This book is an essential starting point”, explains on Europe 1 Marina Carrère d’Encausse, which presents the program.

“Today, people doubt, wonder how their elders are treated in nursing homes, and if there are no other solutions for the future,” she observes. “We want people to be able to ask their questions about the situation and how best to do today and where we can go tomorrow. I tell myself that things can change. Fortunately they have been denounced. Now we are going from the front.”

Finding Solutions to Elder Addiction

To talk about abuses in accommodation establishments for dependent elderly people (Ehpad), the former employee of Orpea Laurent Garcia will notably be on the set to testify. He is one of the main whistleblowers behind Victor Castanet’s book. He now works in an Ehpad which he says works well and which takes care to preserve the dignity of the elderly.

The second part of the show will look for solutions to help viewers direct their loved ones to good establishments. Annie de Vivie, the founder of the agevillage.com site, which specializes in advice on aging well, will notably be on set to respond to the concerns of the French.

According to Marina Carrère d’Encausse, it is still possible to age well in France. “There are still EHPADs which work very well, with a particular will and carers who do not change every day. There are also the SIAD, home nursing care, supported by Social Security”, lists she. “There is also an EHPAD observatory which was launched last October and which would like to be able to carry out checks and visits, monitor where the money is going and how residents are treated.”

The special program “Ehpad, what now?” is broadcast Tuesday from 1:40 p.m. on France 5.
