Eidos Montreal: Embracer continues to lay off workers and attacks the Quebec studio, Deus Ex as collateral victim

If 2023 was already catastrophic in terms of layoffs in the video game sector, this new year 2024 has already reached heights in barely a month, notably last week on the side of Microsoft which announced the elimination of nearly 1,900 positions, following in particular the acquisition ofActivision Blizzard. This Monday, another entity well known to players announces very bad news. Indeed, Eidos Montreal had to make the difficult decision to part ways with 97 of its employeeswhether they are developers, members of the administration or support services. As a reminder, the studio was bought in 2022 by Embracer Groupwhich closed Free Radical Design last month and had already made other layoffs, notably at Crystal Dynamics (tomb Raider)… In short, it is not good to be in a studio owned by a group where investors only think about making more and more profits at the expense of the employees.

Here is what he said Eidos Montreal on Twitter / X :

Over the past 17 years, our teams at Eidos have worked on some of the industry’s most beloved brands, combining deep storytelling and innovation into unique games. We’ve created memorable, award-winning experiences that we’re proud of and we know our team members put their heart and soul into it.

The global economic context, the challenges of our industry and the global restructuring announced by Embracer ultimately impacted our studio. The difficult decision was made to lay off 97 people from the development teams, administration and support services.

We are working to support all affected staff throughout this transition. These very talented, very experienced people are coming into the workforce, and we want them to find their next projects and we help them do that.

As we navigate these challenging times, the well-being of our team is our priority and our continued commitment to creating games that players can enjoy in the near future.

To our players…it’s often not just the games, but also the game creators that we all celebrate and admire. Our commitment is always to create the best games for our incredible fans and even with this restructuring change, we continue to fight to deliver these awesome experiences to share together. Thank you for your continued support and best wishes.

It could have stopped there and not really touched the heartstrings of the players too much, except that Jason Schreier Bloomberg added his grain of salt by providing information not officially communicated and which will annoy more than one.

Indeed, according to its sources, Embrace would have canceled a game Deus Ex which had been in development for two years and was expected to enter full production later this year, preferring that the team focus on the creation of an original license. In the genre of making stupid decisions on paper, this hurts, since fans have been waiting for a new episode for years…

If you like the productions ofEidos, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is sold from €19.99 on Amazon.
