(Boursier.com) — Awarded in September 2023, Kapsch TrafficCom brings a MLFF (Multi-Lane Free Flow) toll system to the AREA network, including the key A43, A41, and A49 motorways, east of Lyon. This project involves the installation of nearly 30 additional gantries, covering approximately 430 kilometers of motorway and marking a significant step forward in the operation of motorway infrastructure in this region.

Bernard Lamy, EVP Toll Application Center at Kapsch TrafficCom, said about the project: “After the successful commissioning of France’s first free-flow installation on the A79 in November 2022, this project further strengthens our relationship partnership with APRR. This is an important first step in migrating APRR’s entire toll system to free flow, which will improve the overall economic efficiency of toll collection and the experience of users of the APRR network.”

Hybrid model

The new system implemented is a hybrid model that replaces traditional entrance toll stations. Under this project, drivers will be detected by road cameras or DSRC beacons when entering tolled sections of the highway. Upon exiting, drivers will stop at toll plazas to pay the calculated amount, a process that ensures efficiency and ease for both light and heavy vehicles. This project is all the more structuring as these highways serve as vital transit routes to connect Switzerland, Italy and France.

The overall commissioning date for this free-flow system is planned for the year 2026. This transition represents a major step forward in APRR’s commitment to innovative transport solutions for sustainable mobility, offering both time savings and increased comfort for motorists…
