“Election arena” in Saxony-Anhalt: Haseloff ruled out black and blue again

“Election arena” in Saxony-Anhalt
Haseloff rules out black and blue again

In Saxony-Anhalt, the AfD could get almost as many votes in the upcoming state elections as the CDU, which is still leading in most of the forecasts. Nevertheless: A coalition or other cooperation with the right-wing populists is again ruling out the country’s chief Haseloff in the debate on the top candidates.

A few days before the state elections in Saxony-Anhalt, Prime Minister and CDU top candidate Reiner Haseloff ruled out cooperation with the AfD again. With him, a coalition or any other form of cooperation “with the AfD is excluded,” said Haseloff in the “electoral arena” of the MDR. If the CDU gets a government mandate in the election on Sunday, then there will only be “a coalition of the center with democratic parties”.

In the MDR election round, the top candidates from the CDU, SPD, Greens, AfD, Left and FDP exchanged blows on, among other things, the corona policy. Haseloff defended the corona strategy of the black-red-green state government. The CDU politician also referred to federal legislation and the federal emergency brake, which Saxony-Anhalt also had to follow. The top candidates of the co-ruling Greens and the SPD, Cornelia Lüddemann and Katja Pähle, also emphasized that the falling incidence values are also a result of consistent measures.

The AfD, on the other hand, criticized the fact that the lockdown should have ended much sooner. The government has “failed to find a good measure of what it restricts and what it releases,” criticized top candidate Oliver Kirchner. Haseloff countered that people are talking “not about numbers, but about human lives”.

The top left woman Eva von Angern criticized that parliament was left out of the Corona decisions. FDP top candidate Lydia Hüskens complained that measures such as curfews were not suitable to protect health.

CDU ahead in most polls

In Saxony-Anhalt there will be elections on Sunday. In most of the polls, the ruling CDU is ahead, closely followed by the AfD. The Greens could double their 2016 election results, while the SPD is stagnating at the low level from then. The left has to reckon with losses, while the FDP could succeed in returning to the state parliament after ten years.

According to the polls, it could theoretically be enough for a continuation of the currently ruling black-red-green coalition. A coalition of CDU, SPD and FDP as well as CDU, Greens and FDP or a constellation of four would also be conceivable. Haseloff had already indicated that he would continue the Kenya coalition regardless of the disputes in recent years about the radio license. Haseloff ruled out a coalition with the AfD or the Left.
