Election chaos in Berlin: Federal Returning Officer objects

Election chaos in Berlin
Federal Returning Officer objects

In Berlin there will be parallel federal and state elections on September 26th, plus a referendum. Too much for the city, the problems are numerous. The Federal Returning Officer believes that they should also have an influence on the election result. He therefore appeals.

Federal Returning Officer Georg Thiel appeals to the federal election results in the capital after the mishaps in the elections in Berlin. In certain constituencies there were electoral errors that could have been avoided, said a spokeswoman for the Federal Returning Officer in Wiesbaden. The Federal Returning Officer therefore sees it as his task to raise objections. The “Business Insider” portal had previously reported on it.

The objection should go to the Bundestag election review committee on Friday. The committee must then check whether there were electoral errors and whether these were relevant to the mandate, i.e. had an impact on the distribution of seats in the Bundestag.

Ballot papers in wrong polling stations

In the elections to the Bundestag, the House of Representatives and the district council assemblies on September 26, there were several mishaps in Berlin. In some polling stations ballot papers ran out, in others the wrong ones were initially on display. In addition, long queues formed in front of some voting locations, so that some voters were only able to cast their votes after 6 p.m.

According to Business Insider, 200 out of 2,000 polling stations had problems with the House of Representatives. The portal relied on a “secret report” by the Berlin state election officer Petra Michaelis, who has since resigned.
