After the USA, Tesla has to recall two of its models in China as well. According to the Chinese market supervisory authority, almost 20,000 imported Model S cars and around 36,000 imported Model 3 cars are affected due to safety deficiencies. In addition, according to Reuters, there are around 144,000 Model 3s that were produced in China.
The cars are affected by the same safety risks that Tesla has already recalled half a million cars in the United States this week. In the Model 3, defects were found around the rear view camera. This could be damaged by opening and closing the trunk lid and eventually fail. With the Model S there is a risk of the bonnet opening unexpectedly if a locking mechanism were released. This could obstruct the driver’s view.
Germany unclear
It has not yet been possible to clarify whether the defects and a possible recall will also affect vehicles in Germany. According to the dpa, the responsible Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA) in Flensburg could not initially be reached for a statement.
This year, Tesla had to improve many of its cars in China. Around 300,000 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles received an update due to software problems. It was said that the cars should suddenly accelerate unexpectedly. The cars didn’t have to go to the workshop for the correction, the update came over-the-air.
Tesla generates around a fifth of its sales in China, the world’s largest market for electric cars. The group founded by Elon Musk has been operating a factory in Shanghai with several thousand employees since 2019. In October 2020, Tesla announced that vehicles manufactured there would be exported to Germany, France and other European countries.
