The car rental company Hertz will finally reduce its ambitions in the purchase of electric vehicles, in order to avoid making too many losses.

For many, electric cars are the future, with a market expected to experience colossal growth by 2030. But if enthusiasm persists, some players are starting to show the first signs of skepticism, like the company specializing in Hertz car rental. The latter in fact announces putting the brakes on its ambitions to acquire new electric cars. In question, certain exorbitant costs.

Repair costs remain twice as high

The electric car is the future! This is the message trumpeted all over the world for several years. But for some companies, it is also a very expensive gift. This is the case of the famous American car rental company Hertz. The company has just announced that it is pausing the program through which its fleet of internal combustion engine cars would quickly be replaced by electric vehicles.

Why is that ? Well because repair costs are not the same depending on the type of vehicle. “ For comparison, collision and damage repairs for an electric vehicle are often twice as high as those for a comparable combustion engine vehicle » says Stephen Scherr.

Unclear objectives at Hertz

So, even if the maintenance costs of electric models are lower than those equipped with internal combustion engines, due to exorbitant repair costs, electric vehicles remain more expensive to operate. Which therefore requires returning to the mega-purchases announced in October 2021, such as the acquisition of 100,000 Teslas, which should have been completed at the end of 2022.

Stephen Scherr, on the other hand, did not describe the extent of the decided decline, contenting himself with describing Hertz’s new pace in the field. The group must therefore “ adapt accordingly, expecting that [l’accroissement du] electric vehicle fleet is slower than expected, but we will be stronger for having started the journey when we did » he concluded.
