Renault unveils the R5 Diamant, an electric concept car based on the mythical car of the 70s. Designed with French designer Pierre Gonalons, the R5 Diamant takes up the codes of the original model while positioning this very popular car in a context “ art Deco “. Noble materials, modern features and a retro look for this visually very special all-electric concept car.
As you know, a nostalgic wind is blowing in the Renault design offices. The diamond brand has planned to launch two 100% electric cars inspired by two emblematic models in its history: the 4L and the R5. In 2021, Renault confirmed the arrival of an R5 EV which will be marketed in 2024. The manufacturer’s promise: to bring electrification to as many people as possible with a comfortable range for a city car of 400 kilometers.

While waiting for the launch of the commercial model, Renault is celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of the R5 with dignity, which is one of the brand’s best-selling models (more than 5 million copies marketed between 1972 and 1984). R5 Diamant: neo-retro look created by a French designer
The R5 Diamant is a concept. This means that it is not a commercial model, but a technical and design demonstration. It was developed by Renault’s “Colours and materials” team and by Pierre Gonalons, French designer and decorator. The result is a very surprising car visually, although you will notice that the designer has taken care to resume the lines of the R5 as it was in the 70s. Simple and popular lines that contrast strongly with many chic details, even ostentatious.
Some examples. The three-layer paint with gold pigments on a pink background is covered with a frosted varnish. Faceted headlights and taillights look like diamonds. The hubs of the wheels are adorned with a sun. The brass decorative elements are coated in pale gold. The steering wheel is marble on a carbon base. Marble that you also find in the storage compartment. On the dashboard, you find a horsehair fabric. And the floor mats are made of mohair wool.
The R5 Diamant is also a very modern car
The R5 Diamant is therefore a neo-retro work of art. But it is also a “modern” car. First the motor is electric. Then the opening of the doors is conditioned by fingerprint readers. All counters are digital. They indicate vehicle speed, time and battery charge level. And a slot is provided for a smartphone that can be recharged. On the other hand, there does not seem to be a real screen in this car…
The car exists in only one copy, since it is a concept. However, it will be sold at auction at the end of the summer. A collection of NFTs will also be produced and sold. The profits from these sales will be donated to an association.
