Electric scooters are exploding, and the numbers say it

The new report from the Federation of Micro-Mobility Professionals shows impressive sales figures for the electric scooter market: in 2021, volumes almost reached one million.

Every year, the electric scooter market breaks a new glass ceiling. And the least we can say is that the 2021 vintage was particularly lucrative for it given the excellent sales volumes highlighted by the latest report from the Federation of Micro-Mobility Professionals (FPMM) .

Last year, 908,000 units were sold, an increase of 42% compared to 2020. This figure represents 51% of the total number of sales of EDPM (motorized personal transport device), also represented by Segways, monowheels and other hoverboards.

Paradigm shift

Several reasons explain this finding. Faced with inflation and the energy crisis, the Frenchconsider new mobility practices that are less costly, greener and more sustainablein terms of transport, we can read. As a result, the electric scooter appears to be an interesting alternative.

It would also be a question of a small paradigm shift in terms of use: “We are now seeing a clear change in the motivations of users who are more and more likely to use the electric scooter for regular or daily home-work trips.“, explains Grégoire Hénin, vice-president of the FPMM.

And to continue:The French have appropriated this new mode of mobility and, if newcomers to micromobility continue to increase, regular users renew, in nearly 80% of cases, their EDPM for a more robust and more durable product, better corresponding for their use“.

An ever richer offer

With an increased offer and fiercer competition pushing manufacturers to offer products at the best possible price-quality ratio, demand is faced with an increasingly relevant and interesting range of choices. Which can absolutely push them to set their sights on an electric scooter, which is more practical and compact than an electric or mechanical bicycle.

The price of electric scooters also plays a role in the final choice: with an average price of 341 euros, according to the FPMM, this type of machine becomes more accessible than a VAE generally sold around 2000 euros for a decent model. Nevertheless, 46% of scooter buyers are ready to invest up to 700 euros for the renewal of their vehicle.

+748% in five years

If the figures for 2021 are impressive, it is the upward curve observed since 2017 that shows the extent to which electric scooters are taking an important place in the micromobility landscape. In 2017, sales volumes were limited to 107,000 units.

From 2018, the figures swelled to 233,000, before soaring to 478,000 in 2019 then 640,000 in 2020, to close the whole thing at 908,000 in 2021. An increase of 748% in five years. Will we reach the symbolic bar of one million in 2022? Answer in a few months.
