Much more expensive fines and minimum age revised upwards, a new decree has tightened the regulations on small rolling machines.

Since Friday 1er September 2023, there is something new for electric scooter users. A decree signed by Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne and several members of the government has shaken up the regulations with a fine which, in the event of an infraction, will now cost you 135 euros, and a minimum driving age which has increased to 14 years.

Tighten the rules to fight against recklessness

In detail, the decree implements two measures from the National Plan to better regulate electric scooters, already mentioned in our columns. Here is what changes:

  • Fines go from 35 to 135 euros;
  • The minimum age is increased from 12 to 14 years old.

We can therefore speak of a real toughening of the rules in force, a toughening intended to better protect pedestrians, and obviously the users of these electric scooters, who sometimes take reckless risks, ignoring any good rule of the Highway Code.

Stemming the downward spiral of fatal accidents due to the use of electric scooters

Riding on a prohibited lane or driving an electric scooter together are no longer considered to be punishable by a fine of 2e class, but a fine of 4e class, which justifies the increase from 35 to 135 euros.

These two measures are intended to stem the downward spiral of the electric scooter, which has caused too many deaths since their trivialization almost everywhere in recent years. In Paris, the town hall and the inhabitants have put an end to self-service devices, the last of which have also been removed from the streets of the capital this week.
