Electrician, plumber… Why the prices of quotes from craftsmen are jumping

All French craftsmen suffered the effects of the war in Ukraine. Material deliveries are being delayed, the price of goods is rising and the cost of energy has skyrocketed. Result: the professionals increase the prices on their quotes, with variations from one to the other.

Shortage of materials, lengthening of deliveries and soaring energy costs: craftsmen suffer the repercussions of the war in Ukraine and inflation, reports Capital. Quite naturally, the estimates for many works have increased in certain sectors, according to a study carried out by Capeb, the main employers’ union for building craftsmen.

Prices have been rising since the beginning of 2022. Between January and April 2022, bills have thus increased by 18%. By way of comparison, prices increased more during this first quarter than during the whole of 2021. The brutal nature of this increase challenged our craftsmen, comments Jean-Christophe Repon, president of Capeb. It’s a shock.

Significant shortage of materials in carpentry

The most affected sectors are locksmithing and carpentry: 21.5% price increase on average. In masonry and general contracting, prices rose by 19.4%slightly more than roofing, plumbing and heating (17%). The development, decoration and plastering sector is affected, as is the electricity sector (16.4%).

Logically, the craftsmen passed on this increase to the customers’ bills. The average quote price increased by 5.4% in the first quarter of 2022 and 11.5% compared to the beginning of 2021. 60% of companies say they are practicing this price increase. They were only 45% last January.

Carpenters and electricians, who are most dependent on the supply of materials, are the most inclined to raise their prices. They are. 75% at electrician craftsmen and 72% among carpenters. Among plumbers, roofers and heating engineers, 68% craftsmen indicated that they had recently increased their prices.
