  • The cantons of Basel-Stadt, St. Gallen and Thurgau are allowed to resume attempts at electronic voting.
  • The Federal Council has granted basic approvals for a limited electorate up to and including the vote on May 18, 2025.
  • The cantons also require approval from the Federal Chancellery for each ballot. You received this for the June 18, 2023 vote.

The Swiss Post’s e-voting system has been improved to such an extent that it can be used within this limited framework, explained Federal Chancellor Walter Thurnherr to the media in Bern. In addition, e-voting will be available to Swiss abroad who are entitled to vote in all three cantons that have applied for a basic permit.

Overall, the cantons are applying for around 65,000 voters to vote in the first ballot on June 18, 2023. This corresponds to around 1.2 percent of all Swiss voters.

E-voting should also be continuously improved and checked in Switzerland in the future. The experience gained in practical use should also be used for this purpose. E-voting systems were last used in Switzerland on a trial basis in 2019 for federal votes.

The fully verifiable Swiss Post system is now available for the first time, as the Federal Chancellery writes. Verifiability is an important prerequisite for ensuring security. It allows any manipulation of the electronically cast votes to be identified and responded to using check codes and mathematical proof.

The source code of the improved post e-voting system and the documentation have been published since 2021. Since then, the system and operation have been checked in various steps by independent experts. Likewise by the public in the context of public intrusion tests.
