  • England’s women win their EURO semi-final against Sweden 4-0 in Sheffield.
  • Tournament top scorer Beth Maed puts the “Lionesses” on the road to victory with her 6th goal.
  • In the second semi-final on Wednesday, record European champions Germany and France will meet (live on SRF Zwei from 8:10 p.m.).

In the 68th minute, Bramall Lane in Sheffield trembled for the third time. The 28,000 or so fans – as long as they supported the home team – were again in ecstasy. Alessia Russo had just made it 3-0 for the English women. And the goal was something of a challenge: the midfielder initially failed to score against Sweden’s goalkeeper Hedvig Lindahl after a wonderful combination. But she sunk the margin: Russo Lindahl tunneled with the hoe.

So it was clear: England would defeat the semi-final curse. At the last three major tournaments (EM and WM), the “Lionesses” had always lost in the semi-finals. Later, Fran Kirby even increased it to 4-0 in Sheffield. In the 80th minute, the fans were already singing “Football’s coming home” for the first time. England’s women make the Brits dream of their 1st title since the men’s World Cup triumph in 1966.

Mead with 6th goal in 5th game

Tournament top scorer Beth Mead gave England the lead after 34 minutes with their 6th goal of this EURO. Immediately after the break, Lucy Bronze headed the lead to make it 2-0. The goal was still checked by VAR, a little later the Swiss referee Esther Staubli decided on goal.

Sweden’s missed opportunities

After the 0:3 at the latest, the Swedes surrendered. The Vice Olympic champions failed to steer the game in a different direction in the initial phase. In the first nine minutes alone, “Tre Kronor” missed three top-class opportunities.
