Emmanuel Macron “extremely concerned about the risks” for nuclear security

The French president “strongly condemns any attack on the integrity of Ukrainian civil nuclear installations caused by Russian forces in the conduct of their military aggression against Ukraine.

Emmanuel Macron is “extremely concerned about the risks” to nuclear security “resulting from the Russian invasion” and “will propose in the coming hours (…) concrete measures to ensure” the security of the five Ukrainian nuclear sites , announced the Elysée on Friday. “Russia and Ukraine must reach an agreement on” the basis of these proposals, resulting from IAEA criteria, to “together ensure the preservation of the security” of these sites, adds the French presidency in a press release.

The French president “strongly condemns any attack on the integrity of Ukrainian civilian nuclear installations caused by Russian forces in the conduct of their military aggression against Ukraine. It is imperative to guarantee their safety and security”, adds the Elysée . “Russia must also allow free, regular and unimpeded access of personnel to the facilities to ensure their continued safe operation,” the presidency said.

After the night bombing of the Zaporozhye power plant, the largest in Europe, the G7, of which France is a member, called on Russia to end its attacks “in the immediate vicinity of Ukrainian nuclear power plants”.

“Any armed attack and any threat against nuclear facilities used for peaceful purposes constitutes a violation of the principles of the Charter of the United Nations, of international law (…)”, according to the G7 countries which includes Germany, the United States, France, Great Britain, Italy, Canada and Japan.

“Russia must immediately cease its illegal military actions”

They say they support the initiative of the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, “in favor of an agreement between Ukraine and Russia which guarantees the safety of nuclear installations in Ukraine” . Emmanuel Macron also spoke on Friday with the director general of the IAEA.

“Russia must immediately cease its illegal and dangerous military actions in order to allow the full control of the Ukrainian authorities over all nuclear installations within the internationally recognized borders of Ukraine”, claims Paris in its press release.

The attack on the Ukrainian power plant raised fears of a disaster on the ground and raised the tone against Moscow, Washington evoking a “threat to Europe and the world”.

“We survived a night that could have ended history. History of Ukraine. History of Europe”: an explosion at the Zaporozhye power plant in southern Ukraine , would have been the equivalent of “six Chernobyl”, warned Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky while elsewhere on the ground the pressure of the Russian army continues on the key cities of the country.
