Emmys 2020: More nominees in comedy and drama categories

For the Emmy Awards 2020, the Television Company has made some rule changes. At the 72nd Emmys in Los Angeles on September 20, the categories "Outstanding Drama Series" and "Outstanding Comedy Series" will be expanded – there should be a total of eight instead of five nominees in the important categories. This is reported, among other things, by the US industry portal "Deadline". The reason for the adjustment is the growing number of streaming and TV projects.

But other categories could also be expanded. This is related to the number of inquiries that the Academy receives. If there were more than 240 suggestions per category, this would also be increased to eight nominations.

Lots of "excellent work" at Emmys 2020 despite Corona

"The growing number of proposals reflects the new voices, TV platforms and tremendous content growth from existing platforms in our industry," said Frank Scherma, Chairman and CEO of the TV Academy. "Despite the production interruptions caused by Covid-19, there is a rich selection of excellent works for this year's competition." In total there are 15 percent more candidates this year than in 2019. So far it is still unclear whether the Emmys, moderated by US talkmaster Jimmy Kimmel, can actually take place in traditional form at the end of September or whether there will be a virtual variant without an audience.
