Virtual private network provider Atlas VPN has announced that it will shut down at the end of April. Licensed subscribers VPN valid will automatically migrate to NordVPN.

The sentence is irrevocable: Atlas VPN will definitively cease all activity on April 24. This announcement comes in a general context of massive takeover and concentration of virtual private network services in the hands of a handful of companies, as evidenced by the acquisitions of ExpressVPN by Kape Technologies (CyberGhost) in 2021 as well as Atlas and Surfshark by Nord Security in 2021 and 2022.

Technical, financial and competitive challenges not met

By Nord Security’s own admission, the closure of Atlas VPN is a strategic response to new financial challenges and the rapid evolution of technologies in the cybersecurity sector. In a press release, the company spoke about the difficulties faced by Atlas in keeping pace with these transformations. The company has indeed encountered major technological obstacles which have made its autonomous operation increasingly complex.

Added to these structural difficulties is the growing problem of competing in an increasingly competitive sector. With fewer resources and increasingly solid competition, Atlas has not been able to strengthen its presence on the VPN market. While the service was expected to remain independent and consolidate its free VPN offering, its lack of resources and its too-light subscriber base pushed Nord Security to financially support the development of its infrastructure and maintain a high level of security. This hole in the budget was significant enough to push the parent company to throw in the towel, considering that Atlas VPN was no longer a viable project in the long term.

A partially assured future for Atlas VPN subscribers

The closure of Atlas VPN opens a new path for its users. Subscribers with a paid plan will automatically migrate to NordVPN. This transfer will allow them to access all of the famous VPN’s premium services at no additional cost, until the end of their current subscription period. On the other hand, nothing of the sort is envisaged for Internet users who have subscribed to a premium license on the Apple App Store. A reimbursement of their subscription is nevertheless planned.

The compensation is much less generous for users of the free version of Atlas VPN. Nord Security has not provided any compensation other than a rebate on its subscriptions to encourage Internet users left behind to join its virtual private network service. Failing that, it will always be possible to turn to other free solutions like Proton VPN, or freemium like Privado VPN and Hide.me.

NordVPN Essential

  • Excellent performance
  • Streaming (including Netflix US) and very efficient TV access
  • Very large number of servers

A leading figure in VPNs, NordVPN continues to evolve at a rapid pace. Its performance has gone up a notch thanks to the deployment of a fleet of 10 Gb/s RAM servers and its NordLynx protocol. In addition to well-built applications, it stands out for its very good performance and excellent stability. A service that we can only recommend and which seriously competes with ExpressVPN and CyberGhost in terms of value for money. The NordVPN Advanced subscription includes VPN + NordPass (password manager) while the NordVPN Premium plan includes VPN + NordPass + NordLocker (Secure cloud storage)

I dismantle, I reassemble, I repair, I tinker, I experiment, I divert, I shape, I start again. Determined, nothing electrifies me more than spending hours trying to understand the why and the how, until it works. If I'm not behind my screen testing software or writing about Silicon Valley, you'll find me in the vegetable garden configuring a connected irrigation circuit, powered by solar energy.
