Emmanuel Macron assured Wednesday that the “right to die with dignity” would be the subject of a “law of freedom and respect”, while the government text on the end of life is eagerly awaited. The bill must theoretically be presented in December to the Council of Ministers, after having been postponed. At this stage, the creation of “active assistance in dying” remains dependent on Emmanuel Macron’s decisions, the words of the Head of State on the subject are therefore particularly scrutinized.
“Push this text forward in the coming months”
In a speech before the Grand Orient de France, he recalled the memory of two Freemason politicians, Henri Caillavet and Pierre Simon, who defended the “right to die with dignity”. “A cause which must find, as I promised, a translation into a law of freedom and respect,” said the president, without revealing further his intentions or the timetable.
The grand master of the Grand Orient, Guillaume Trichard, called for a law. “It is now time to seize national representation,” he told the president. “I thank you for the contributions that you have produced in conjunction with the government, which will allow us to move this text forward in the coming months,” replied Emmanuel Macron.
