“Energy communities allow the reappropriation of energy production sources by citizens”

NOTOur centralized energy model, based primarily on fossil fuels and nuclear power, only survives on the infusion of subsidies. It is less and less sustainable, less and less autonomous, less and less profitable, more and more polluting, in the short, medium and long term.

This model promotes energy production far from the consumer, with degraded national infrastructures and a waste of energy intrinsic to this model. Added to this inventory is the current risk of scheduled power outages, which have so far been prevented thanks to European electrical interconnections.

Model agility

Faced with this observation, it is essential to rethink our energy model to get out of our dependence on nuclear power and fossil fuels. In this sense, the law of acceleration of renewable energies [adoptée le 7 février par le Parlement] was a missed opportunity to initiate this change: no objectives, no funding, no measures to strengthen the capacity for action, an incomplete planning mechanism, etc. This text unfortunately misses the stated ambition.

There is an urgent need to thoroughly rethink our networks, our production and consumption models. Largely overlooked by the law on the acceleration of renewable energies, the “energy communities” nevertheless represent a credible alternative to our current model, to such an extent that the ecologists in the European Parliament have even managed to bring them into European law.

They offer an opportunity to make a socially equitable energy transition while reclaiming power over our energies, hitherto held by the fossil fuel sector. Sector that continually blocks actions threatening its financial interests, to the detriment of populations and the environment. The agility of the energy communities model makes it possible to meet all of these challenges.

Our premise? For energy as for the rest, consuming less is not enough: we must also consume better. Our commitment ? Empower production and consumption players by favoring local energy production projects, on a smaller scale, in a decentralized and intelligent way. These projects must be developed today to quickly and sustainably ensure the supply of renewable energy to the entire population, especially the most precarious.

A non-profit

Driven by a group of people, energy communities are characterized by their local roots and their horizontal governance. Very concretely, any local and decentralized project for the production and consumption of renewable energy can be qualified as an energy community.
