(Boursier.com) — Engie and its partners, Eku Energy and Fluence, have reached a new milestone in Australia with the commissioning of the Hazelwood Battery Energy Storage System (HBESS – Hazelwood Battery Energy Storage System).

Located on the site of the former Hazelwood Power Station, the Hazelwood Battery Energy Storage System (HBESS) is a large-scale 150 MW/150 MWh battery, which is the largest to date Engie’s BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) worldwide. The battery will be made up of 342 Fluence modules, providing top-notch reliability and safety.

The installed capacity will make it possible to store the equivalent of one hour of the electricity produced by the solar systems installed on the roofs of 30,000 homes in the State of Victoria and to inject this electricity during peak periods.

This first repurposing of former thermal assets to renewable energy technologies in Australia is a concrete illustration of the country’s energy transition and of Engie’s commitment to its decarbonization trajectory. Indeed, HBESS reinforces the stability of the electricity network while being part of the process of rehabilitation of the old coal-fired power plant initiated by Engie in 2017, in accordance with the Group’s strategy to withdraw from electricity production. from coal.
