The energy company will build a giant electrolyser and buy CO2 captured by ArcelorMittal in its steelworks.
The circular economy illustrated. Engie presented its Reuze project on Monday for the production of synthetic fuel in Dunkirk for aviation and maritime transport. The energy company intends to invest more than half a billion euros with its American partner Infinium, which specializes in “e-fuels” (synthetic fuel). The final investment decision is expected at the end of 2022, for commissioning in 2026. To do this, the energy company will build a giant pack of 400 megawatt electrolysers. Today, the world’s largest sets of electrolyzers are twenty times smaller.
The site will organize an uncommon ballet of material and gas flows. Let’s take green hydrogen first. It will be produced by the giant electrolyser using green or carbon-free electricity and water. This water will be 50% reused in a loop in the process, subject to reprocessing between two uses. As for the CO2Reuze will buy 300,000 tons of it per year from ArcelorMittal, which will capture it on its steel site…
