BMW continues the electrification of its range with the launch of the i5 Touring, its first electric station wagon. Larger, taller, more habitable, it will be available from its launch in May 2024 with two engine levels and a battery promising up to 560 km WLTP.

After the launch of its all-electric i5 sedan, it was quite logical for BMW to launch the all-electric version of the 6th generation of its Touring station wagon. Designed on the same platform, it is however intended to be more habitable than its predecessor.

From marketing, two engines will be available, a 340 hp propulsion and another full version developing 601 hp. In all cases, a battery with a net capacity of 81.2 kWh will ensure a range ranging from 445 km to 560 km depending on the engines and other options. Prices start at €77,700.

Touring is growing

The i5 Touring stands out for its generous dimensions, stretching 5.06 meters, making it the largest 5 Series estate to date. Habitability also increases with a width of 1.90 m and a height of 1.51 m. The wheelbase, the longest in its category, has also increased to reach 2.99 m.

Despite its imposing size, BMW has ensured that this station wagon maintains a sporty look dear to the brand, with a front that incorporates LED elements arranged almost vertically serving as indicators and daytime running lights. The grille features new Iconic Glow surround lighting. From the side, the line is very slender with plays of angles and smooth surfaces which energize the silhouette. At the rear, the rear bumper, the wheel arches
sculpted, as well as the large optics visually widen the vehicle.

However, this is not just a styling effect since regardless of the engine, all variants of the new BMW 5 Series Touring have a luggage compartment volume which can increase from 570 to 1,700 liters.

The interface which runs under BMW OS 8.5 is enriched with online services such as access to YouTube, or the Air Console platform which allows you to play while waiting for recharges.

Also, this electric station wagon integrates the optional Park Assist Pro function which manages automated parking and maneuvers over a maximum distance of 200 meters controlled, either in the vehicle or using a smartphone outside the vehicle. the car.

Finally, in addition to level 2 semi-autonomous driving which allows you to manage the speed and distance with the vehicle in front of it, this i5 Touring allows you to manage, with a simple glance and on the motorway, changing lanes by looking into the exterior mirrors. This Highway Assistant is currently only available in the United States, Canada and Germany.

Two motors, one battery

The BMW i5 Touring will be available in two versions from launch. The BMW i5 M60 xDrive has a power of 601 hp. The two motors are integrated into the front and rear axles to provide all-wheel drive. The torque generated can reach 820 Nm and allows acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds and a maximum speed of 230 km/h.

For its part, the BMW i5 eDrive40 version has a motor on the rear axle which develops 340 HP, 430 Nm of torque and already allows an honorable 0 to 100 km/h in 6.1 s and a top speed of 193 km/h.

In all cases, the powertrains are powered by an 82.1 kWh battery which allows a range of up to 560 km on the eDrive40 version and 506 km on the M60.

Good news, so as not to have to waste too much time, the charging power is 11 kW on AC alternating current (22 kW optional on the M60) and increases up to 250 kW on direct current on a super-charger . The manufacturer announces a time of 30 minutes to go from 10 to 80%.
