The federal government has provided more clarity with so-called booster vaccinations for children and adolescents between 12 and 18 years of age. According to a letter that Health Minister Karl Lauterbach sent to the federal states on Monday, among other things, they have a right to booster vaccinations “regardless of the recommendations” of the Standing Vaccination Commission (STIKO). There is not yet a general STIKO recommendation for the third spade for children and adolescents from the age of twelve.
However, the vaccination commission also advises this age group to have a first and second vaccination. For five to eleven year olds, she also recommends vaccinations with the vaccine from Biontech and Pfizer – initially only for children with previous illnesses and for those around whom there are people who are at risk of a serious disease course who themselves could not be protected by a vaccination . When the vaccine was approved by the EU for those aged twelve and over in May, the STIKO initially only recommended vaccinations for adolescents with previous illnesses. The recommendation for all children aged twelve and over did not follow until August.
As with all other vaccinations for minors, the Biontech vaccine is an option for young people, according to Lauterbach’s letter to the federal states. Moderna should therefore only be administered to people over 30 years of age. In the case of vaccination damage in children and adolescents between the ages of 12 and 18, the federal government guarantees a claim to care provided that an mRNA vaccine such as Biontech is used that is approved for this group of people. The Berlin Senator for Health, Ulrike Gote, then announced that, as of Wednesday, a booster should be available in the capital for this age group as early as three months after the last vaccination.
