Environmental organization Greenpeace declared ‘undesirable’ by Russia

MOSCOW, May 19 (Reuters) – The environmental group Greenpeace was declared “undesirable” by Russia on Friday, effectively preventing it from operating in the country.

In a statement, Russia’s attorney general said Greenpeace had tried “to interfere in the internal affairs of the state” and had “involved in anti-Russian propaganda” by calling for sanctions against Moscow.

Greenpeace could not immediately be reached for a reaction.

Greenpeace, one of the world’s best-known environmental organizations, operates in over 50 countries.

The label of “undesirable organization” has already been attached to dozens of foreign groups in Russia since the entry into force of this classification in 2015. (Reportage Reuters, French version Jean-Stéphane Brosse)
