Nico Denz (Bora – hansgrohe) won the 12th stage of the Giro d’Italia from Bra to Rivoli. The 29-year-old German relegated his fellow escapees, Latvian Toms Skujins (Trek – Segafredo) and Australian Sebastian Berwick (Israel – Premier Tech) to 2nd and 3rd place in the final sprint after 185 km.

For Denz it is the 1st stage win of a Grand Tour ever. A German, Pascal Ackermann, already won the 11th stage on Wednesday.

Favorites held back

After the heavy crashes on Wednesday, the general classification riders were cautious. Geraint Thomas successfully defended the Maglia Rosa. However, the Ineos Grenadiers driver was a considerable gap of more than 8:19 minutes to the day’s winner. Still, the Welshman failed to further distance the other favorites Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma). The Slovenian crossed the finish line almost at the same time as Thomas.

This is how it goes

On Friday the time has come: The Giro stops in Switzerland. The stage starts in Borgofranco d’Ivrea and ends in Crans-Montana. The route has been slightly modified. Instead of driving over the San Bernardo, due to heavy snowfall and the resulting risk of avalanches, the road tunnel is taken.

The 13th section will be challenging, as there are 3 climbs of the most difficult category. The favorites in the overall ranking should have the best chance of winning the day. Follow the stage from in Switzerland on Friday from 3 p.m live on SRF Zwei and in the SRF Sport App.
