- From 2035, no new cars that emit greenhouse gases should be sold in the European Union.
- The negotiators of the EU states and the European Parliament agreed on this on Thursday evening.
The new law would make it impossible to sell new petrol and diesel vehicles. This decision is to be reviewed again in 2026. The EU project thus clears the next hurdle.
The environment ministers agreed on this proposal back in June. A compromise had to be found together with the EU Parliament, which wanted to ban combustion engines completely by 2035.
Please to the EU Commission
The EU Commission should continue to review a compromise as to whether so-called e-fuels may be used in the future, as they would not harm the environment.
Christian Lindner, head of the German FDP, is satisfied with this compromise. This would ensure openness to technology. His party colleague Jan-Christoph Oetjen adds that this would pave the way for the operation of the internal combustion engine with alternative fuels.
Another way for the law
After the negotiation of the negotiators of the EU states and the parliament, the law is not yet decided. In order for this to come into force, the EU member states and the European Parliament still have to agree to this agreement.
