Euro zone: The economic climate deteriorates in August


BRUSSELS (Reuters) – Economic sentiment in the euro zone deteriorated in August, continuing the steady decline seen since the start of the year, data released by the European Commission showed on Wednesday.

The European Commission’s monthly economic sentiment index fell to 93.3 in August from 93.5 in July.

Optimism in the industry deteriorated from -9.3 in July to -10.3. Sentiment in services, which contribute the most to eurozone gross domestic product (GDP), fell from 5.4 in July to 3.9.

Consumer expectations for inflation forecasts for the next 12 months jumped to 9.0 from 4.9 in July, breaking the downward trend seen since April.

Manufacturers’ inflation forecasts also rose for the first time since March, to 3.6 from 3.4 in July.
