  • Manchester United wins the Europa League play-off second leg against Barcelona 2-1 (first leg 2-2).
  • After an early deficit, the “Red Devils” at Old Trafford managed to turn things around after the break thanks to Fred and Antony.
  • The round-up with other Europa League games of the evening can be found here.

With the out in mind, Barcelona threw everything forward again in the final minutes. Robert Lewandowski had the equalizer deep in stoppage time, which would have saved the Catalans at least into extra time. After a through pass from Ferran Torres, the Pole pushed the ball past David De Gea. But Raphael Varane was there and cleared just before the line.

Eliminated in the Champions League group stage, the Catalans’ European campaign has come to an end this season. Manchester United, on the other hand, are in the round of 16 and will find out which opponents they face next at Friday’s draw in Nyon.

Meet Fred and Joker Antony

The “Red Devils” earned progress with a strong second half. Less than 2 minutes after the restart, Fred equalized the early deficit that the home team had gotten themselves in the 18th minute with a foul penalty that was strictly whistled and converted by Lewandowski. Barcelona then got back into the game a little better, but Manchester United mostly stayed on the trigger.

The turnaround was finally perfected by Antony, who came on for Wout Weghorst after the break. After two blocked shots, the Brazilian got the ball and hit the far left corner to make it 2-1.
