  • Leverkusen averted their first defeat of the season late in the quarter-final second leg of the Europa League at West Ham and advanced after a 1-1 draw.
  • Roma are waiting in the semi-finals and also beat Milan (2-1) in the second leg.
  • Despite a 1-0 win, Liverpool failed due to a 0-3 defeat at Atalanta.
  • The Italians now face Marseille, who beat Benfica in a penalty shootout.

West Ham – Leverkusen 1:1 (first leg 0:2)

After 43 competitive games without defeat, the newly crowned German champions were once again threatened with bankruptcy in London – but Jeremie Frimpong averted this with his equalizer in the 89th minute. Thanks to the 2-0 win in the first leg a week ago, the “Werkself” would have reached the semi-finals of the Europa League against AS Roma even if they had lost 1-0. But Frimpong spared his team a hectic final phase. Michail Antonio gave West Ham the lead with a header in the 13th minute, Leverkusen’s Cup goalie Matej Kovar didn’t cut the best figure. Afterwards, David Moyes’ team ran unsuccessfully. Granit Xhaka played as usual for Leverkusen.

AS Roma – Milan 2-1 (first leg 1-0)

Last year’s finalist is still on track in the Europa League. AS Roma, Servette’s opponents in the group phase, didn’t miss a beat in the second leg after winning 1-0 in the quarter-final first leg and are challenging Leverkusen in the semi-finals. Daniele de Rossi’s team started like the fire department at their home Olimpico. After a shot off the post by Leonardo Spinazzola, Gianluca Mancini was quickest in the 12th minute and scored to make it 1-0. Ruben Loftus-Cheek had a chance to equalize shortly afterwards, but it hit the crossbar. Practically in return, Paulo Dybala increased the score to 2-0 (22′). After a red card against Zeki Celik for a rude foul, the Romans were outnumbered from the 31st minute onwards. But Milan couldn’t manage anything more than Matteo Gabbia’s goal in the 85th minute. Noah Okafor came on as a substitute in the 69th minute.

Atalanta – Liverpool 0-1 (first leg 3-0)

Liverpool missed the small miracle against Atalanta. After the clear defeat in the first leg, a 1-0 win in Bergamo was not enough for the Reds to turn things around. Outgoing coach Jürgen Klopp’s team got off to a perfect start: Mohamed Salah converted a hand penalty after just 7 minutes. As a result, however, the English remained too harmless. Salah missed the best chance with an inaccurate lob (40th). Atalanta moves into the semi-finals of the Europa League for the first time ever and meets Marseille there.

Marseille – Benfica 4:2 nP (first leg 1:2)

Olympique Marseille fought their way into the next round in front of frenetic home fans. In the penalty shootout, Benfica players Angel Di Maria and Antonio Silva lost their nerves and both missed. For Marseille, four successful shooters were enough to advance. The French were in the lead for the majority of the regular season. However, little came from Benfica – and this nonchalance was punished in the 79th minute: Faris Moumbagna headed 1-0 and paid off the first leg mortgage.
