28% of patents come from companies in the Old Continent, compared to 24% for Japan and 20% for the United States.
The future is hydrogen. But a carbon-free and… increasingly European hydrogen. This is what emerges from a study conducted by the European Patent Office (EPO) and the International Energy Agency (IEA). It covers patent filings in hydrogen worldwide over the period 2011-2020. “Patents give a good idea of technologies on their way to market,” explains Yann Menière, the chief economist of the EPO.
The analysis is very broad, since the study takes into account the entire value chain, from hydrogen production to uses, including transport/storage. “The main lesson is the excellent performance of European Union countries, since 28% of patents are located there”, welcomes Yann Menière.
