European Championship draw in Hamburg – Swiss national team meets Germany, Scotland and Hungary – Sport

  • The Swiss national football team will face hosts Germany, Scotland and Hungary at EURO 2024 (June 14th – July 14th).
  • The European Championship group draw in Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie is therefore both attractive and feasible for Switzerland.
  • Groups B and D are particularly tough.

Switzerland got into an attractive group at the European Championships in Germany. They were the last national team to be drawn into Group A with hosts Germany. The other opponents are Scotland and Hungary. Germany and Scotland will play the opening game, Switzerland will face Germany at the end of the group phase.

The national team’s games will take place on June 15th (Hungary) and June 19th (Scotland) in Cologne and on June 23rd against the hosts in Frankfurt.

The starting position in the group seems to be open. While group leaders Germany are going through a weak phase under new coach Julian Nagelsmann, both Scotland and Hungary are on the rise.

First finals duel with Germany

Switzerland has already played against Germany 53 times and has a clearly negative record. The last Swiss victory dates back to May 2012, when the national team won a test match. At a final round, the meeting between the two neighboring countries will be a premiere.

The Scots ranked second in the European Championship qualifiers behind Spain – but ahead of Norway with top stars Erling Haaland and Martin Odegaard. Except for the last 3 games, the British were on an equal footing with the European champions of 2008 and 2012. They met Scotland Switzerland in the group phase of the 1996 European Championships in England, when Artur Jorge’s team lost 0-1.

Hungary remained unbeaten in qualifying group G and distanced itself from, among others, Serbia and Montenegro. The biggest name in Italian coach Marco Rossi’s team is captain Dominik Szoboszlai, who has been playing for Liverpool since this season. The squad also includes a man with Super League connections, Servette defender Bendeguz Bolla. Switzerland also played against the Hungarians once on a major occasion, albeit a long time ago: at the 1938 World Cup in France, the national team lost 2-0.

The other groups

There are special affiches in Groups B with Spain, Croatia, Italy and Albania as well as in Group D with France, the Netherlands, Austria and the winner of playoff path A (Poland, Wales, Finland or Estonia).

The European Championship opens on Friday, June 14th at 9:00 p.m. with the game between Germany and Scotland in Munich. The final will take place on July 14th in the Berlin Olympic Stadium.
