Despite being behind, Slovakia beat Iceland 4-2 and goes to the 2024 European Championship. Portugal and Luxembourg celebrate comfortable victories.

Slovakia qualified for the European Football Championship for the third time in a row thanks to a 4-2 home win over Iceland. For the Slovaks, who ranked second in Group J behind Portugal, a point against the Icelanders would have been enough to get their ticket to the European Championship.

In Bratislava, Lukas Haraslin mutated into a decisive figure in front of full stands. Shortly after the break, the 27-year-old winger secured the preliminary decision with two similar shots into the right corner to make it 3-1 (47th) and 4-1 (55th). Andri Gudjohnsen, son of ex-Barça striker Eidur Gudjohnsen, embellished the result with his 2:4 a quarter of an hour before the end.

Things didn’t look ideal for Slovakia at the beginning. In the 17th minute, Iceland surprisingly went ahead with a header from Orri Oskarsson on a cross from ex-FCZ player Victor Palsson. Before the break, Juraj Kucka and Ondrej Duda turned the game to 2-1 with a penalty within 6 minutes.

Portugal with mini-victory in Liechtenstein

For the already qualified leader Portugal, being a guest in the Principality of Liechtenstein was about (almost) nothing. However, Cristiano Ronaldo & Co. could not afford a defeat against the blatant outsider. The completely defeated Liechtensteiners held their own until the break. Then, shortly after the restart, Ronaldo opened the scoring with his 108th competitive goal for Portugal. A little later, Joao Cancelo made it 2-0 (57th) after a mistake by goalie Benjamin Büchel.

Failed Tabakovic premiere

Hertha striker Haris Tabakovic had a dismal debut for Bosnia-Herzegovina. In the insignificant game away against Luxembourg, the Bosnians went down 4-1 – they had already lost the first leg against this opponent 2-0. Tabakovic played alongside Miroslav Stevanovic until half-time before the Servette player was substituted. With the first shot at the Luxembourg goal, Bosnia scored a consolation goal in the 94th minute, and in direct return the score was 4-1.
