Since Monday April 15, the speaking time of candidates in the European elections has been counted down. The media must respect the principle of fairness and respect the rules established by Arcom. Europe 1 explains everything to you.
Here we go, the speaking time of candidates for the European elections is finally counted down. This total fairness must be respected between all candidates, until the vote on June 9. The count will therefore take place over a period of eight weeks.
Warnings in case of non-compliance with the rules
Television channels and radio stations will therefore have to transmit to Arcom, the media regulatory authority, the count of the speaking time of candidates, parties and political groups. The media must take into account “the results of each list in previous elections and their weight in the outgoing European Parliament, their place in the animation of public debate or even the polls”, assures Anne Grand d’Esnon, president of the group of work Pluralism and ethics of information and programs, from Arcom, in an interview with The cross. In the event of non-compliance with the rules, Arcom may consider issuing warnings or even sanctions.
Two exceptions on television
In total, ten radio stations and 17 television channels are affected. Europe 1 is obviously one of these 27 media. On the other hand, Web TV, YouTube channels, or even Twitch, are not required to respect this fairness. There are also two other exceptions on television: Arte and the parliamentary channels.
