Even before “Black Monday”: First NFL team coldly throws out the coach

First NFL team coldly throws out the coach

The season so far has been disappointing for the Raiders around Jakob Johnson from Stuttgart. The owner of the team is now pulling the ripcord and throwing out the coach and general manager. It is the first coach dismissal of the season so far.

The NFL has its first coaching firing: The Las Vegas Raiders have parted ways with head coach Josh McDaniels. The American Football League team announced this on Tuesday. General manager Dave Ziegler also had to leave the once again strong Amon-Ra St. Brown one day after the 14:26 defeat against the Detroit Lions.

“After careful consideration of what the Raiders need moving forward, I have decided to part ways with Josh and Dave,” owner Mark Davis said in a statement. It is still unclear who will take over as interim coach for the Raiders, who face the New York Giants on Sunday. According to “ESPN” information, linebackers coach Antonio Pierce could take over.

A star receiver with no reception

The Raiders around Jakob Johnson from Stuttgart are threatened with the next disappointing NFL season; they have lost five of eight games so far. Even with new quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, they can’t get going offensively at all. Star pass receiver Davante Adams only had one catch for seven yards against Detroit. The six further throws in his direction were unsuccessful.

McDaniels and Ziegler were hired in January 2022. They took over the team after it surprisingly made the playoffs in 2021. Owner Davis said at the time, according to ESPN, that the Raiders should take the “next step” under McDaniels and Ziegler. Instead, both had a record of 9-16 across seasons, with no playoff participation.

For McDaniels it is the second failed head coaching position after he coached the Denver Broncos from 2009 to 2010 and was fired there during his second season. As was the case then, this time he separated from the established quarterback and installed a new one, who did not bring the desired success.

For the NFL, it is the first coaching dismissal of the season so far. Typically, the most ejections occur on the infamous “Black Monday”, the first Monday after the end of the regular season and before the start of the playoffs. For this season that is January 8, 2024.
