Bruce Wayne has been ensuring law and order in Gotham City for decades as Batman. There are now numerous successful film adaptations of the dark hero such as “The Batman” and also of his opponents such as the Joker, played by stars such as Robert Pattinson (“Twilight”) and Joaquin Phoenix.
But one film could have almost ended the comic hero’s famous franchise in one fell swoop. The “Batman” film in question will soon be removed from the schedule of the streaming service Amazon Prime Video.
We’re talking about “Batman & Robin,” which was apparently such a huge financial failure that even lead actor George Clooney is ashamed of his role in it! And no, it wasn’t just because of his legendary nipple Batman suit.

“Batman & Robin” is the fourth and final part of the relaunched “Batman” series from the 80s, which was put together by star director Tim Burton (“Wednesday”). Joel Schumacher directed the film, as he did with the previous film, “Batman Forever,” which also met with little enthusiasm. But “Batman & Robin” almost put an end to the franchise.
A total of eleven nominations for the Golden Raspberry and worldwide box office revenues of only 238 million US dollars made the film a flop in 1997. Even on Rotten Tomatoes, the unpopular action film only received 12% of critics’ ratings and 16% of audience votes.

In an interview on the British talk show “The Graham Norton Show,” George Clooney admitted that he always apologizes to fans of the “Batman” series because he feared he had “destroyed the franchise” after “Batman & Robin.” You can watch the video here:
In addition to Clooney in his role as Batman, other stars such as Arnold Schwarzenegger (“Terminator”) as Mr. Freeze, Uma Thurman (“Royal Blue”) as Poison Ivy and Alicia Silverstone as Batgirl also played in “Batman & Robin”. Nevertheless, the large cast of stars could not save the film from failure.
Nevertheless, there was a happy ending: with the new version by Christopher Nolan (“Oppenheimer”) and Christian Bale as the new Batman, the series was able to continue with “Batman Begins” in 2005. This was followed by “The Dark Knight” and “The Dark Knight Rises”, which are still considered to be among Nolan’s best films to date.
