Event Data Recorder: This component will be mandatory in the car from July 2024

MOBILITY

From July 7, 2024, every new car registered in Germany must have a so-called event data recorder, a kind of black box like on an airplane.

If a plane crash occurs, the search for the black box begins immediately after the accident. The technical device records important data such as altitude, speed and radio traffic. There is something similar in many modern cars, in the form of a so-called event data recorder (EDR).

As the ADAC reports, from July 7, 2024, every newly registered automobile in Germany must have such an EDR.

The purpose of EDR is to gain a better understanding of an accident through recorded data. The EDR is usually installed in the airbag control unit, as all relevant information from acceleration sensors comes together here (…). Data such as speed, engine speed, steering angle and whether the airbag was triggered are recorded. The recording is triggered in a time window of five seconds before and 300 milliseconds after the crash.

Anyone who is now worried about data protection can breathe a sigh of relief. The very sensitive data is only stored locally in the EDR. Only if there is a serious accident and thus civil or criminal proceedings can a court or public prosecutor order the data to be read, according to the automobile club.

In addition, the data from the car black box can never be viewed in isolation. They only ever serve as an accompanying aid when reconstructing the course of an accident. The ADAC also emphasizes that the EDR does not make any video recordings like a dashcam and that only data from your own vehicle is recorded, never that of other road users.
