Olympique produces slapstick lightning goal

In the semi-final first leg of the Conference League, Feyenoord and Olympique Marseille delivered a goal spectacle for 45 minutes and nine seconds. The winning goal for the Dutch caused amazement and ridicule. In the second game, Jose Mourinho has to get angry late, but can still hope for the final.

Star coach Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma have created a good chance of reaching the final in the Conference League. The sixth-placed in the Italian soccer championship drew 1-1 (0-1) at Leicester City in the first leg of the semifinals. Lorenzo Pellegrini (15th minute) put the Romans ahead against England, who were tenth in the table. Ademola Lookman (67th), loaned to Leicester by Bundesliga club RB Leipzig, equalizes for the hosts.

In the other semi-final, Feyenoord Rotterdam celebrated a home win. The third-placed in the Dutch championship defeated Olympique Marseille 3-2 (2-2) in their own stadium. Cyriel Dessers (18’/46′) with a brace and Luis Sinisterra (20′) scored the goals for the hosts. Ahmadou Bamba Dieng (28th) and Gerson (40th) scored for France’s second in the championship.

The 3:2 for the hosts came after a bad mistake by the French: When they kicked off, it took nine seconds after the restart, then the ball was in the goal of Olympique Marseille for the third time. Three French defenders played the ball further and further back unchallenged – until finally Dessers in the last back pass, rounded the goalkeeper and pushed in the winning goal. In the group stage, Feyenoord caused Bundesliga representative Union Berlin to exit early.

Both semi-final second legs will take place next Thursday. The winners will play for the title on May 25 in Tirana, Albania.
