New York prosecutors want to find out if Donald Trump paid hush money to porn star Stormy Daniels. The ex-president believes he will be arrested today. Meanwhile, his campaign team zeroes in on the main investigator.
Former US President Donald Trump has continued his attacks on the responsible prosecutor ahead of a possible indictment over a hush money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels. Trump’s campaign team on Monday described Manhattan prosecutor Alvin Bragg as a “woken tyrant who has politicized the justice system.” Bragg is also a leftist “activist,” has “stalked innocent victims,” is “soft on career criminals,” and has been targeting Trump “for years.”
An indictment against Trump over a hush money payment to Stormy Daniels ahead of the 2016 presidential election seems ever closer. Trump himself said on Saturday that he should be arrested on Tuesday. However, there was no confirmation that the ex-president would be indicted that day.
The investigation, led by prosecutor Bragg, a Democrat, is directed against a $130,000 hush money payment that Trump’s then-private attorney Michael Cohen paid to Clifford shortly before the 2016 presidential election. The porn actress claims to have had an affair with Trump years before the election, which he denies.
Possible campaign finance violation
The payment was apparently intended to prevent Clifford from going public, which could have harmed Trump during the election campaign. The cash flows and their accounting may have violated campaign finance laws.
If Trump is actually indicted, it would be the first indictment against a former president in US history. The Republican, who wants to retake the White House in the 2024 presidential election, has described the judicial investigation as a politically motivated “witch hunt” and called on his supporters to protest.
