- Former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori has been released from prison.
- The 85-year-old has been in poor health for a long time.
- Fujimori was sentenced to 25 years in prison for human rights violations.
For the release, the Constitutional Court reinstated a controversial pardon from 2017 on humanitarian grounds. Fujimori served around 16 years of his sentence after being extradited by Chile in 2007.
He was convicted of ordering atrocities during his 1990-2000 administration in the fight against the guerrilla groups, but was pardoned by former President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski on Christmas Eve 2017.
At the time, the pardon had been repeatedly revoked or suspended by lower courts under pressure from the Inter-American Court and the victims’ families.
During his time in office, Fujimori had security forces take rigorous action against left-wing and allegedly subversive forces, and parliament was disempowered.
At that time, the state saw itself threatened by the Maoist terrorist organization “Shining Path”. In addition, tens of thousands of indigenous women were forcibly sterilized in order to reduce the number of children they had. They were seen as an obstacle to development.
