  • At the beginning of the meeting in the UN Security Council, Russia criticized the fact that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was allowed to speak as the first country representative – before the member states of the Security Council.
  • The Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, currently chairman of the council, then countered with a quick-witted answer.

It is a moment shortly after the beginning that will remain of this UN Security Council meeting. Volodimir Selensky has just taken a seat and Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama is speaking. As chairman of the council, he is supposed to lead the meeting, but the Russian ambassador’s demand that Zelensky not be allowed to speak as the country’s first representative provokes a heated and extremely undiplomatic exchange of blows.

Finally, Rama suggests to the Russian: “You stop the war and President Zelensky will not speak.” No surprise: Moscow’s representative doesn’t respond to this. Zelenskiy is allowed to speak – but there will be no direct confrontation with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov at the meeting on the sidelines of the UN general debate.

They stop the war and President Zelensky will not speak.

An hour after Zelensky and his entourage exit through the exit on the right side of the hall, the light wooden doors on the left move. Lavrov takes the stage. The two opponents don’t get in each other’s way.
