Expansion brings jobs – biodiesel made from cooking oil – from deep fryer to tank

Bio Oil, based in Markthof in the Gänserndorf district, specializes in the production of biodiesel from used cooking oil. The company’s existing production facility in Krems is now being expanded by a total of seven million euros, creating 25 additional jobs.

From the reopening of the plant in the spring of 2022, up to 50,000 tons of biodiesel can be produced in Krems. Most of the used cooking oil used comes directly from the region. The Kremser plant is one of four production facilities of the internationally active family company Bio Oil. Another is in Carinthia, one each in Holland and one in Germany. This year, 343,000 tons of biodiesel are expected to be produced in these. Compared to fossil diesel, CO2 can be reduced by up to 85 percent. With various waste oil collection sites and processing plants, Bio Oil has a total of 21 branches in twelve countries. In 2020 an annual turnover of 840 million euros was generated. Demand is constantly increasing – not least due to an EU directive that has given preference to waste-based fuels. This can also be satisfied despite the lockdown, although you can already feel the closed restaurants – important suppliers of waste oil. “But we also rely on used cooking oil from municipal collections and on industrial companies,” says Bio Oil.
