Expensive fun: Is the new MacBook worth it? – GIGA Insights

As expected by many Apple fans, a new version of the MacBook Air was unveiled at WWDC this week. In this issue of GIGA Insights you can find out why it might not end up in the shopping carts after all.

The topics of the week at a glance:

WWDC Highlights: MacBooks, Lockscreens and Dashboards

Also this summer Apple invited to the annual developer conference WWDC.

Big highlight: The new MacBook Air celebrates its premiere. Installed inside is the M2, successor to the M1, which is said to deliver 18 percent more power than its predecessor. And on the outside: A new design, based on last year’s MacBook Pro, as well as MagSafe for safe charging of the MacBook.
This looks good at first glance and yet there will be some who will not strike at the new MacBook. We explain why in the video.

The big software innovations: Under iOS 16, the lock screen can now be adjusted more. For example, you can choose a different font. The function that allows the data of the portrait mode to be used for background images to make the screen appear more three-dimensional is particularly chic.

Carplay has been redesigned and now becomes the complete car on-board computer. Speedometer, fuel level, navigation, everything can now be called up with Carplay.

More highlights of the WWDC summarized by our colleague Sven:

EU adopts USB-C as charging standard

The EU has now agreed that USB-C will be the standard charging plug in Europe. All manufacturers of technology have until 2024 to adjust to this. This mainly applies to Apple. After all, the company still relies on its own Lightning connector for the iPhone. With the iPhone 15, that could change.

No more combustion engines from 2035

The EU Parliament also agreed this week that cars with internal combustion engines should no longer be sold from 2035 onwards. This decision must now be discussed in the individual state parliaments.

Amazon throws out counterfeits

In a report published this week, Amazon shows how the company has taken down 3 million counterfeit products.
