Expert: This is what your loved one’s gift reveals about your relationship

What is under the Christmas tree this year? Giving can be tricky, especially in relationships, because we read so much into the gifts of our loved one. But are we right about that? An expert reveals what gifts can say – and what not.

The languages of love play an important role in every relationship. American psychologist Gary Chapman has identified five different ways we show affection: through words, gifts, support, time together, or tenderness.

However, not all couples share the same love language, which can lead to disagreements in the relationship, especially around Christmas. While one expresses love through careful choice of gift, gift-giving may just be a chore for the other. But at best you know your favorite person well enough to be able to deal with such differences in a relaxed manner.

But what does it mean when my favorite person gives me perfume or a voucher? James Harris, jewelry expert at “Diamonds Factory”, looked at the most common gifts in romantic relationships and analyzed what they could say about the state of the relationship.

1) Jewelry

Jewelry is a romantic, but also a delicate gift. Is the:the other really able to meet my individual taste? What if I don’t like the piece and don’t want to wear it? Then it’s time to endure a lot of disappointment on both sides and exchange the piece of jewelry.

But James Harris also thinks in this case: Since jewelry is not only a personal gift, but often also an expensive one, it proves that your:e partner sees you as a very special person.

Jewelry gifts really show that your partner cares about you and wants you to be reminded of them on a regular basis. Rings and necklaces are particularly symbolic. Rings are a sign of connection as they are associated with engagement or wedding rings and necklaces have symbolic meaning as we carry them close to the heart, the symbolic home of all our feelings.

2) Joint short trip

A short vacation for two is always great, no matter how long you’ve been together. The gift (which tends to be expensive) also shows that your loved one wants to continue sharing good memories with you. But here too, as with jewelry, sensitivity is important: If he:she gives you a cross-country weekend, although you find the snow and cold awful, you have a small problem. But Harris says:

A trip is definitely a good sign. It means that your partner believes in the future of your relationship and genuinely values spending time together.

3) Vouchers or money

Ikea, H&M or Tchibo? James Harris has rather bad news for recipients of vouchers, gift cards or money in the relationship:

If not specifically asked, this is a big red flag, especially in the early stages of a relationship. You buy gift cards and money from distant relatives you don’t know much about – not your significant other. Unfortunately, this could mean that your partner doesn’t care as much about the relationship as you thought.

4) Perfume

Perfume always exudes a touch of luxury. According to Harris, getting a scent bodes well for your relationship:

Perfume is often seen as a personal and expensive gift, allowing your partner to show you how well they know you by either buying you your favorite scent or encouraging you to try a new scent that they think suits your personality.

But even this gift has its pitfalls. What if I don’t like the choice of my favorite human? Then the house blessing quickly hangs crooked. Only one thing helps: take the whole thing with humor.

5) Homemade

Your favorite person baked, glued, painted or put together a photo book for you? Bingo! Anyone who makes something especially for you, which also suits you well, shows real dedication! Harris:

Something personal is always a good sign and means your partner has really listened to you and thought about what to give you. Your partner has invested time and energy to create the perfect gift to put a smile on your face.

We in the editorial office are already excited about what we will get as a gift and wish all readers that something nice is waiting for them on Christmas Eve!
