Explosions occurred in the southern Russian city of Lipetsk on Saturday night. According to reports, a major fire broke out in a steel mill. The region’s governor, Igor Artamonov, initially reported on his Telegram channel about a fire in a factory hall. The fire has been extinguished and there is no risk of hazardous substances being released. The security services were therefore checking information about a drone attack.
Meanwhile, the Russian Defense Ministry in Moscow reported further Ukrainian drone attacks in the Kursk and Tula regions. Several unmanned missiles were intercepted and destroyed by air defense.
On Saturday, Ukraine has been defending itself against the Russian war of aggression for two years. The country also repeatedly attacks targets on Russian territory with drones. Most recently, according to ZDF, the Ukrainian military has increasingly targeted the Russian oil infrastructure, including refineries and oil depots. Attack drones hit several facilities in the Leningrad, Voronezh, Bryansk, Volgograd and Rostov regions.
According to experts, the Ukrainian attacks are not aimed at massively damaging or leveling entire facilities. Both the damage and the victims are disproportionate to the consequences of the war in Ukraine. Instead, the aim is obviously to cause disruption in as many places as possible in Russia. That is why the attacks are not concentrated on a specific Russian region, but range from St. Petersburg to Volgograd.
