ExxonMobil: ‘net zero’ objective by 2050

US oil giant ExxonMobil announced on Tuesday that it is aiming for net zero greenhouse gas emissions from its own operations by 2050.

The Texas group says it is betting in particular on technologies that enable its customers to reduce their emissions, such as carbon capture and storage, hydrogen energy or biofuels.

In a press release, Exxon also indicates that it is interested in compounds of biological origin as well as in the flow of plastic waste.

In total, the group says it has identified more than 150 processes likely to help it reduce its emissions, whether upstream, downstream or in petrochemicals.

In particular, it plans to deploy less energy-intensive production equipment and to eliminate the use of discharges or flaring at its refineries.

To accomplish this, ExxonMobil plans to invest more than $15 billion in low-emissions initiatives by 2027.
