You know their long, unkempt beards, their grim looks when they pose for photos with their captured weapons. But the Taliban also have another side: they put on make-up!
In many of the photos it can be seen that young Islamists in particular emphasize their eyes with kohl. Kajal is a black eyeliner that is applied above and above all below the eyes. It makes the eyes appear bigger.
Kajal is common among Muslims, who use it as a sign of religious devotion, especially during Ramadan. They do this primarily because, according to the Sunna, the Prophet Mohammed (approx. 570–632) is said to have applied kajal. He also recommended it to others because he believed it was good for the eyes and sight.
Dyed hair and beard
There are also Taliban who dye their scalp and beard hair with henna, reports the “Image”who is on site with a reporter in Afghanistan. With this, too, they emulate the prophet who is said to have colored his hair. Henna can be bought cheaply in Afghanistan.
Taliban dress traditionally. The Salwar Kamiz is a combination of trousers and a long throw-over shirt, which is incised on the sides for greater freedom of movement. A local version of the Islamic prayer cap (takke) is often worn as headgear in addition to the turban. The Islamists also like the flags and coats of arms of the “Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan” on headbands, caps or as patches. (gf)
